Vermonters can agree: our state is not as safe as it once was. I believe this is not “the new normal.” We need not resign ourselves to the rampant violence, drug use, and crime that is reaching deeper and deeper into our communities. Instead, this presents an urgent call to action, because our state government has a responsibility to keep every Vermonter safe. I will support increased funding for our state’s law enforcement agencies, and a more robust police presence at all hours of the day and night. I will also call for the swift passing of a Jessica’s Law for Vermont, an expanded and easily accessible sex offender registry, and strict penalties for the use, sale, and transportation of illegal drugs. Guarding the safety of our communities is something we can all agree on — and it should absolutely be one of our legislature’s top priorities.
